Climate Fiction Short Film

Introduction

Following the launch of the James Webb Space T elescope, another observational infrastructure has been added to Earth’s (already busy) orbit. At this stage, planetary computation manifests through a combination of sensing and computational technologies, facilitating cognition both downwards towards Earth and outwards towards outer space. Many of these computational processes occur in realms invisible to the naked eye – such as the microscopic or frequencies beyond human perception. Such computational knowledge may become a subject for interrogation: who possesses the knowledge about this planet – and outer space – generated by computation, and through what forms? How to conceive of and describe the scope and scale of new technologies in the ‘new dark age’? (Bridle, 2018)
